about

This song is about more than the Cross. It is also about how tragedies in our life can end up becoming salvific, much like the greatest tragedy that ever happened to the tree (it was cut down) became a means of salvation (being made into the wood that saved us). This was written in 2009 at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary.

lyrics

track 03 – on wood so dear (1 Corinthians 1:18)

a tree so dear stands swaying in the breeze
fullness of life in bloom with brilliant leaves
a sign of hope, a sign of glorious youth
it stands eternal witness to the truth

then the woodsman came, bearing axe and saw
forty well-placed strokes, watched the giant fall

oh wood so dear, so roughly cut and hewn
to make a beam, the fate of all but few
a shadow now, a former tow’r of strength
fit only for the carpenter’s bench

then the Son of Man came, without form or grace,
branch of Jesse’s stem, God in human face

upon the back of Him who would be slain
was laid the wood, a throne from which to reign
the wood received the nails that set us free
the King of Kings, Who died upon that tree
