about

In 2006, I was sent to study in Rome for a year. It was a tough transition to leave the seminary where I was studying, to leave family and friends and everything familiar. Thankfully the first month there was spent in Assisi, learning Italian, and basically having tons of time on my hands to write a lot of music (including a few pieces from Mount Zion, including Libations and Stillness [Psalm 131]). This psalm expressed what I was feeling, very much in exile from everything I knew and loved.

lyrics

track 02 – the rivers of Babylon (Psalm 137)

by the rivers of Babylon there we sat and wept
remembering Zion, remembering Zion
on the poplars that grew there, we hung up our harps
remembering Zion, remembering Zion
by the rivers of Babylon, by the rivers of Babylon

if I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither
o let my tongue cling to my mouth if I forget you. (2x)

our captors asked us to sing for them a song of Zion’s joy
they want to hear the treasures of our God
but how could we in foreign lands sing a song of joy,
remembering Zion, remembering Zion
by the rivers of Babylon, by the rivers of Babylon
